Professor Toby Long explains that Positive Behaviour Support is about understanding why behaviour happens and improving a person’s quality of life—not just stopping the behaviour.

👉 In simple terms:
Behaviour is communication, not something to punish.

🧠 1. Behaviour has meaning

  • All behaviour serves a purpose (e.g., to communicate needs, avoid something, gain attention)

  • PBS focuses on understanding the function of behaviour, not just reacting to it

  • This aligns with PBS as a framework that looks at why behaviour meets a person’s needs

👤 2. Person-centred approach

  • Support must be tailored to the individual

  • It considers the person’s:

    • environment

    • health

    • emotions

    • life circumstances

  • PBS aims to respect dignity, choice, and participation

🔄 3. Replace, not remove behaviour

  • The goal is NOT just to stop “challenging behaviour”

  • Instead:

    • teach new, positive skills

    • provide better ways to meet the same need

  • This makes behaviour change sustainable

🛠️ 4. Proactive and preventative

  • PBS focuses on:

    • preventing problems before they occur

    • changing environments that trigger behaviour

  • It is not reactive or punishment-based

🤝 5. Collaboration is essential

  • Effective PBS involves:

    • families

    • teachers

    • professionals

  • Support plans are team-based and individualized

🌍 6. Improving quality of life

  • The ultimate goal is:

    • better wellbeing

    • increased independence

    • meaningful participation

  • Reducing challenging behaviour is a result, not the main aim
